Summary

Description
English: This is a photograph of the Southgate-Lewis House [1] taken circa 1980, nearly one century after its construction. The house had just been saved from demolition (following condemnation). Further, the house had just undergone a historic preservation and restoration. This house was constructed in the late 19th Century on the outskirts of a small town with a population of approximately 15 thousand people. The two story house is clearly narrow and tall, with a high pitched gable at each end of the house. The gable is accentuated by wide white painted crown moulding under the extended overhang. A pair of diagonal brackets adorn each end of the extended overhang. The visibility of these brackets is obscured by the trees; however, a comparable pair of brackets are readily viewed on the dormer, which is shown in a closeup. The unusually ornate pattern of shingles is readily apparent in this image. The fish-scale shingles on the upper level are separated and demarcated from the horizontal siding on the first level by a double band of moulding painted white (a modest entablature of sorts). The bay has a hard angular quality with pilasters flanking each window. The one-over-one double-hung windows on the upper floor above the bay are tall, narrow, and paired. Finally, while the paint on the house in 1980 does a fine job of revealing the beauty of the architecture, the paint does not express the qualities of this Victorian house to the fullest possible extent.
