Summary

Description
English: Original caption: "Fig. 25. Method of Working the Georges Creek Big Vein, 1850." This illustrates room and pillar mining in its primitive form. There is no obvious ventilation planning, and both pillar sizes and heading orientation appear random. The notation "furnace" probably refers to a ventilation shaft where a fire was maintained to improve air circulation.

The text states that this plan is based on an actual survey, probably done in a mine near Frostburg Maryland. It would be interesting to track it down to its original location.
