The present species is easily recognized, with a common pocket-lens, by the transverse furrows and ridges that mark all thebranches and ramuli, and which are indications of the internaljointed main axis and the surrounding lesser axis. When quitefresh, it bears much resemblance to Phacelocarpus Billardieri,but does not become scarlet, like that species, on exposure torain or steeping in fresh-water. Fig. 1. Frond consisting of prostrate surcuU rooting from their lowersurface, and throwing up erect branches (or secondary fronds) of va-rious shapes. Substance horny-membranous, destitute of calcareousmatter. Structure unicellular, the cell (frond) continuous, strength-ened internally by a spongy network of anastomosing filaments, andfilled with semifluid grumous matter.
