Summary

Description
English: An example of Preston’s veil using fish catch in the Persian Gulf. The graph shows the frequency distribution of species abundances (log2 bins) sampled during repeated trawling over a one month (blue bars), two month (gold bars) and one year period (yellow). The smaller (blue) data set is strongly right skewed, however, as the sample size increases more rare species are sampled and Preston’s veil line (indicated in black) is pushed further to the left. One year of sampling (yellow bars) indicate that the fish community is in fact log-normally distributed (modified from Magurran 1988 and 2004).
