Title
Italiano: Mali. recipiente Dogon.
English: Mali, Dogon container
Description

English: Ritual rectangular container on four round small legs. It has anthropomorphic figures sculpted on the sides and handles with animal forms at the sides (head and tail of a horse). Worn surface. This container shows the "Ark of the world", in which Nommo, the mythical progenitor of humanity, who upper body is anthropomorphic, but snakelike below, is supposed to have come down from the sky. In the Ark were the "sons" of Nommo (four pairs of twins, male and female) and all the elements created by the god Amma, which are represented by the figures sculpted on the side panels. The handles on the side take the shape of the head and the tail of a horse, the form in which Nommo hit the earth. The container is used in the midwinter ceremonial that convenes the family lineage and in which the descent of the ark to earth is commemorated. Sacrifices are made to Amma and the ancestors.
