Soldiers raising the flag of Soviet Union on the roof of Reichstag building in Berlin, May, 1945. Original photograph by Yevgeny Khaldei.^[1] This version of the photograph was significantly altered for propaganda purposes; additional smoke was added for dramatic effect, and multiple wristwatches were removed from the lower soldier's wrist, as they would imply that he had been looting. ^[1] Wristwatches were removed from the soldiers to hide indications of looting, and later versions added smoke and replaced the flag for more drama.
