| Description |
English: SS Orkla was built at TMV in Trondheim and was delivered to Salvesen & Thams on 4 June 1908. The ship was 146 feet long with a gross weight of 173 tons and had a passenger capacity of 342.
D/S Orkla was in traffic between Thamshavn and Trondheim from 15 July 1908 to 30 April 1949. After that it was chartered for shorter periods until 1951 when it was sold to the shipping company NV Elbos KAAI Boom in Antwerp in Belgium. Elbos Boom is said to have used the ship for a few years in the Belgian Congo, supposedly on the Congo River. According to the book "Gamle Dampen" by Olaf T. Engvik, the ship should have been observed in Talara in Peru around 1960, and it is the last trace of the boat. Source: Bjørn Tokle (1998): "Communication through 100 years", pp. 84-97. |
