Summary

Description The only surviving Holy Well in Derby. It has its first mention in the year 1190 but could go back earlier to the Northumbrian martyr Saint Alkmund just after the year 800. The well was used for the ancient tradition of Well Dressing but discontinued from the late 1960's after the closure of the original Saint Alkmunds Church which is now on Kedleston Road. The location of the well was in the rural setting of Saint Helens Park until the area began to be built up from 1819. This photo was taken at the bottom of Well Street and its junction with Bath Street. Photo Taken: 07/09/10
