Johann Sebastian Dirr (1766-1830) (?): Monks and soldiers at Salem Abbey, 1804.
Salem, also known as Salmansweiler, had been a self-ruling Imperial abbey for centuries until it was mediatized in late 1802 and its territory annexed to the Duchy (later Grand Duchy) of Baden. The abbey as such remained a religious house or monastery until November 1804 when it was secularized and shut down and the remaining monks dispersed to other religious institutions or became parish priests. Dirr's engraving most likely illustrates that episode.
