Description

Drawing by Sandeep Mukherjee, Untitled (Panel 2) (acrylic, acrylic ink and embossed drawing on duralene, 60" x 102", 2011). The image illustrates a middle period and body of Sandeep Mukherjee's work in the mid-2000s: his process-oriented abstractions that suggest natural and geological phenomena, cosmological events and topographic maps. In this example, done after a series of mandala-like works, he created swirling, zigzagging and entwining sequences of ribbons that shifted between abstraction and suggestions of DNA strands and microscopic, botanic or cosmological forms. Their translucent green, brown, orange and yellow bands contained meticulously brushed striations dabbed in layered strokes and were set on black fields creased with webs of collapsing grids and protuberances. This series of work has been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed widely in national art and daily press publications, and collected by major art institutions.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a middle period and body of work in Sandeep Mukherjee's career in the mid-2000s, after he shifted to process-oriented abstractions that suggest natural and geological phenomena, cosmological events and topographic maps. He created them by applying spontaneous layers of acrylic ink with repeatedly reworked, rhythmic gestures, using tools such as brushes, concrete brooms, carved rolls, sponges and Q-tips to achieve an inexhaustible range of texture and pattern. They evoke the physicality of the body, their own process of being made, and forms such as radiating mosaics, petrified stone, tree rings or mandalas, often juxtaposed against largely white areas of linear rays and rippling forms sculpted in the Duralene surface. Critics likened them to lyrical, avant-garde film-still blow-ups. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key development in his art, which brought ongoing recognition from art journals, daily press publications, and eventually museums. Mukherjee's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Sandeep Mukherjee, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information
