English: The remains of the Shenandoah River Lock, the two stones at the lower right corner, on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal at 60.62 miles just below Lock 33. The NPS site (http://www.hscl.cr.nps.gov/insidenps/report.asp?STATE=&PARK=CHOH&STRUCTURE=&SORT=&RECORDNO=384) says: This lock was built in 1834 to open the canal to the Potomac River and barges crossing over from the Shenandoah river. The lock was built of limestone and was of similar dimension to a typical lock. It is located on the river side end of a short run channel branching out from the canal. A mule crossover bridge would have been required to pass over the entrance to the channel. A ramp was constructed from the towpath up to the vehicular section of the bridge so that mules could cross over the Potomac and stabilize the crossing barges. All that remains is a portion of the river wingwall and the river side of the lower gate pocket, plus a few traces at the exit from the canal.
