Description	Picture of Sam Gilliam's painting Shoot Six (1965) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 2024. An abstract color field painting on stretched canvas, comprising six distinct rays of color that fan out from the bottom right corner toward the top left, growing from small points of color into long triangular forms that fill nearly the whole canvas. The central two triangles are the largest, with the additional four on the outer edges being each around half that size, and they combine to form a kite-shaped composition oriented diagonally across the canvas. Starting from the left-most ray of color, the six monochromatic triangles are deep red, dark orange, a light navy blue, golden brown, yellowish gold, and pale yellow, respectively, and their surfaces are mostly uniform in color tone and texture, with only slight instances of varying tone where the color darkened; there is no visible paint build-up on the canvas, with the colors appearing to be soaked into the material. The rays are separated by thin strips of bare canvas, with two larger triangular areas of unpainted canvas on either side of the composition. The only points where any of the colors overlap are at the bottom right corner where the rays are smallest and the artist allowed the colors to mix and interrupt most of the bands of bare canvas, along with a section just above the bottom corner, between the gold and pale yellow triangles, where their edges overlap for about 1/4 of their length.
