Summary

Description

The Domesday book mentions a church in Sibthorpe in 1086, but the present church dates from the 13th century. In the 14th century an Ecclesiastical College was founded, with several chantries and priests. The nearby dovecote is part of the once large and important College of Priests located to the east of the church.

The church consists of a western tower, nave, chancel, vestry, and south porch. The tower dates from the 13th century and is of two stages. It is topped by a plain parapet. The nave originally had north and south aisles, but these were demolished in the 17th century, the filled in arcades are still visible in the north wall. The north windows were reused. In the 18th century the nave underwent much restoration, although the tower arch and chancel arch are basically 13th century. The chancel was built in connection with the College of Priests in the early 14th century, and there is an Easter Sepulchre in the north wall, with figures under a crocketted gable. There is an alabaster monument to Edward Burnell from the late 16th century consisting of an effigy on a tomb which is cracked in half.

The church has a long history of being in need of repairs, and as late as the 1960s its future was in doubt.

Recently the pews have been removed in the nave, to give a spacious multifunction area.
