Summary

Description
English: This photo is of Roman Catholic Sister Regina Purtell (1866-1950), who was a nurse. She was known in the media as "The Florence Nightingale of the Spanish-American War," because she volunteered to care for Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders at the Camp Wikoff Army Hospital, Montauk Point, Long Island. When Roosevelt was president, he asked her to be his personal nurse for a surgical procedure at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, and she later was a nurse for his children. The photo was provided by the Provincial Archivist of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Louis, from their archives in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
