Summary

Description
English: Parliamentarian John McMaster, Brisbane, ca. 1895. Born on the island of Islay, Scotland, in 1830. Died in Brisbane on 29 February 1942. In 1854 he came to Queensland as a farmer. Around 1870 he became a storekeeper at Fortitude Valley, in Brisbane, and was elected an Alderman of that ward two years later. He subsequently represented Fortitude Valley in the Municipal Council for many years. He was elected Mayor of Brisbane for the first time in February 1884 and re-elected in 1890, 1893 and 1897. During the financial crisis of 1893 he proved his ability when the municipality found itself without funds to continue urgent works. McMaster raised 225,000 pounds with debentures. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in September 1885. He supported the construction of the railway from Roma Street through the city and to Fortitude Valley.
