Summary

Description
English: Stone Mill, Stone (home of HOVIS) This watermill was built by Robert Bill in 1795. Water comes through the raised leat on the left. Stoney Richard Smith was born in the mill house opposite in 1836 and in 1887 patented an idea to extract wheatgerm, lightly cook it and replace it in the bread. He teamed up with a firm of millers in Macclesfield and his invention became known as HOVIS. A contraction of Hominis Vis (the strength of man). Thus, the household name originated here in Stone. The mill is now an hotel and restaurant.
