Description

Drawing by Sue Hettmansperger, Shadows (graphite on paper, 14" x 14", 1979). The drawing illustrates an early period and body of work in Sue Hettmansperger's career, when she produced abstract colored pencil and mixed-media drawings in the late 1970s and 1980s. These drawings employed minimal forms using mazes of looping, overlapping strips, quadrants, zigzags and geometric shape. They were especially noted for their crisp architecture and enigmatic spatial sense. This work and similar works were publicly exhibited in prominent venues and discussed in major art journals and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating an early period and body of work in Sue Hettmansperger's career: her abstract colored pencil and mixed-media drawings from the late 1970s and 1980s, which brought early recognition. These drawings adapted the minimal forms of Constructivism and American Precisionism, and consisted of mazes of looping, overlapping strips, quadrants, zigzags and geometric shapes that formed shallow but complex, spaces. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key body of work and developmental phase in her art. Hettmansperger's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Sue Hettmansperger, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
