Summary

Description
English: The Great Gate at the entrance of the Pawtucket Canal. Known as Francis' Folly, Francis Gate, or the Great Gate - Lowell, Massachusetts. Built by Chief Engineer James B. Francis in 1850, it protected Lowell from devastating floods in 1852, 1936, 2006, and 2007. The wooden gate suspended from the house was used in 1852 and 1936, whereas a more modern steel bulkhead of 16 inch by 16 inch beams was braced against the gatehouse in 2006 and 2007. Now part of the Lowell National Historical Park. Photograph taken by me, July 2005.
