THE JER8EYMAN. 15 ated. A few years later they had a third inwhat became Alexandria (Mount Pleasant).The first mentioned was called Bethlehemand Upper Bethlehem, the second LowerBethlehem, and the third the Log MeetingHouse Congregation. Whether the town-ship derived its name from the Churches, orwhether they were so called from that of thetownship, cannot be determined ; but proba-bilities favor the former. The autonomy ofthese pioneer congregations in their earlystruggles was subjected to several varia-tions. They were sometimes associatedunder one pastorate and represented in theChurch judicatories by one lay delegate,and sometimes were separate and independ-ent of each other. According to Rev. Mr.Webster, the historian of the PresbyterianChurches in this Country prior to 1760,Bethlehem in Hunterdon County was avacancy in the Presbytery of Philadelphiain 1736. This related to the two congre-gations of Bethlehem—one between Pitts-town and Clinton and the other what laterbecame Kinjerseyman00deat_0
