The wind camefrom another quarter, and the monotonous coveringof grey clouds began to disclose blue sky in manyplaces. The afternoon sun poured shafts of lightthrough the moving clouds, and awakened brightcolours over forests, meadows, and streams. 1 This beautiful scene opened before us so suddenlythat for a time the cliffs echoed to our exclamationsof pleasure, while those who had recently been mostdepressed in spirit were now most vehement in ex-pressions of delight. A short time before no onecould be found to assume the responsibility of such afoolhardy trip, but now each member of our partyhad been the proposer of this glorious excursion.
