Summary[edit]
Description | Picture of Bob Thompson's painting The Spinning, Spinning, Turning, Directing (1963) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2023. An expressive figurative painting depicting several fantastical and nonsensical abstracted figures of varying colors interacting and tumbling through an abstract space. A central pale figure is falling through the scene, followed by a green winged figure flying upright. The background behind the figures is pitch black except for an archway of color revealing a tree and the sky. Several other figures are laying down, standing, and sitting at the bottom of the painting, depicted variously in blue, pink, yellow or red, and shown with minimal details apart from faces painted simply with lines. |
