Summary

Description
English: The biggest cats in London! The Egyptianate decoration of the front of this building, originally the Carreras cigarette factory, was inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920. Also found was the temple at Bubastis of the cat-headed goddess Bast or Bastet. The Carreras company logo had been a black cat ever since 1886 after customers at the original tobacconist's in Wardour Street grew accustomed to the sight of the shop cat curled up in the window. In 1904 Black Cat cigarettes was introduced as one of the first machine-made cigarettes manufactured in Britain and the company used the symbol in a great deal of promotional material.
