. Smith, who died 1627, aged 79, the greatbenefactor to many counties, but to this in particular, havingbeen a beggar followed by a dog. The latter probably took itsrise from this picture. There is no obligation on the parish torepair this pane, though it was repaired by order of the vestryin 1G10. In the vestry is a drawing of the Pedlar byPouncey. In the churchwardens books are the following items, con-nected with the Pedlar:1607. Paid to the glazier for a pannell of glaSse,for the window where the picture of the Pedler stands 0 2 0 1703. March 6. Paid Mr. Price for a new glass Pedler 2 0 0 It may be a rebus on the name of some person; as the figureof a Pedlar, carved on a seat in Swaffham church, Suffolk,about which a like idle tale was handed down in the mostserious manner, by Sir William Dugdale and Sir RogerTwysden, was nothing more than a rebus of the name of JohnChapman, who was among the benefactors to the rebuilding orrepairing of that beautiful church. pox *J:. - . ciibeth.

JFitifc PARISH CHURCH. 6S •Formerly there was a painted window between the fourth andfifth corbels, quarterly 1 and 4 azure, three crescents argent,2 and 3 argent, a chevronel between three cocks heads erasedgules. In the times of Popery, the high altar was not the only altarin Lambeth Church, nor, as it is believed, in any other parishchurch in England. The churchwardens accounts havereferences to altars to the Virgin Mary, to St. Thomas, to•St. George, to St Nicholas, and to St. Christopher; viz. A. 1520.
