THE SOLDIER IN OUR CIVIL WAR. 97 these, which took place on the 8th of July, has bymany been dignified by even s higher name. Earlyin the afternoon of that day, whili observationswore going on near Bealington, two large bodies ofConfederate troops were seen emerging from thewoods, and detachments from the Ninth Indianaand the Fourteenth Ohio at once pushed forward tomeet them. This they soon did, and a lively engage-ment began benvcen the two parties.
