| Description |
English: St Michael and St Wulfad's Church on Lichfield Street, Stone, Staffordshire. Monument of William II Crompton (d.1603) of Stone and of his wife Jane Aston, daughter of Sir Walter Aston of Tixall, Staffs. His father William I Crompton originally from Stafford, made his fortune in London and after the Dissolution of the Monasteries purchased former monastical property, including the priory of Stone. In 1562 William I Crompton was granted a coat of arms, but they were rejected by the heralds in 1583. William II Crompton's son was Thomas Crompton (c.1580–1645), MP for Staffordshire 1614, 1621 and 1628. (Source: CROMPTON, Thomas (c.1580-1645), of Stone and Little Fenton, Staffs.
Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1604-1629, ed. Andrew Thrush and John P. Ferris, 2010[1]). The monument was originally in the chancel of the Church of Stone Priory, demolished in 1750s and replaced on the same site by the present church of St Michael and St Wulfad. It remains now in the churchyard, decaying from the weather. |
