Summary

Description
English: York Minster, monument to Henry Swinburne (1551–1624), ecclesiastical lawyer and scholar. Born in the ward of Micklegate, York. He married twice, firstly to Ellen Lant, daughter of Bartholomew Lant; secondly in 1613 to Margaret Wentworth, by whom he had a son Toby Swinburne. Arms of Swinburne: Per fess gules and argent, three cinquefoils counterchanged, granted in 1551 to Swinburne of Chopwell, County Durham, by Harvey Norroy King of Arms (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.990). Also at bottom centre arms of Swinburne impaling Wentworth of Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire (Sable, a chevron between three leopard's faces or). (For brief discussion of monument see: J. Duncan M. Derrett, Henry Swinburne (?1551-1624): Civil Lawyer of York, pp.11,28 (text of epitaph)[1]) At top right is shown the arms of Bertram, Lord of Bothall (Bothal Castle, Northumberland): Or, an orle azure, which was quartered by Ogle of Ogle Castle, Northumberland (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, pp.76, 751); John Swyneburne (d.1604) of Wylome, Northumberland, married Dorothy Ogle, daughter of John Ogle, son of Sir William Ogle, brother of Lord Ogle (according to the Heraldic Visitation pedigree of "Swyneburne of Durham", Foster, Joseph, ed. (1887). Pedigrees recorded at the Visitations of the County Palatine of Durham made by William Flower, Norroy King-of-Arms, in 1575, by Richard St George, Norroy King-of-Arms, in 1615, and by William Dugdale, Norroy King-of-Arms, in 1666.
