Summary

Description

Two Chinese statues of foreign dignitaries, made of earthenware with sancai glaze and pigments, from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), dated to the late 7th to first half of the 8th century. The caption for these artworks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art states:

Despite the fact that they undoubtedly depict foreigners of Western origin, these officials are dressed in the typical Tang-dynasty Chinese court dress of a long, wide-sleeved tunic over a long gown. Their hats illustrate two varieties of the standard headgear of Tang-dynasty Chinese court officials.
