Summary

Description
English: Typhoon Neoguri’s winds knocked down trees July 8-9 at Camp Foster, and caused minor damage across U.S. military installations on Okinawa. According to the Okinawa Prefectural Government, the typhoon injured more than 20 people, uprooted trees, caused flooding, and knocked out power for more than 100,000 people on the island. U.S. military installations on Okinawa were affected by scattered power outages, low-lying area flooding and debris. Infrastructure in Okinawa, both on and off base, is designed to survive the high winds of a typhoon. Prior the storm’s arrival, service members stock up on food, water and emergency supplies for use as necessary, and during the storm remain indoors to avoid risk of injury from high winds. Base officials also pre-stage emergency response teams with heavy equipment and tactical vehicles in order to be able to respond quickly should the need arise. The typhoon cleared Okinawa June 9 on a course toward mainland Japan. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Robert Williams Jr./ Released)
