Summary

Description
English: Vauxhall 'Big 6' in a field in Hertfordshire. The design is from the late 1930s and the car was probably built in 1938 or 1939, though I am not sufficiently expert to be sure that it wasn't in fact, assembled in the late 1940s before Vauxhall had their post war range up and running.

This shape of radiator, wire wheels, etc was available between August 1935 and August 1936 when they were replaced by a vertically curved radiator shell and pressed steel wheels. May be checked with display advertisements in nationally distributed newspapers.

Here, helpfully, the shape of the newer radiator may be viewed next to the car in question.

The bit of the UK government database we are permitted to consult on such matters gives the year of manufacture as 1936 and the date of first registration as 01 February 1936. So if the database is correct, this car is a little older than I (this is the photographer writing) has hitherto thought likely. The cylinder capacity according to the government database is 4086cc —and of course, as the photographer would know this was the capacity of the 4-litre (incidentally, most ably written about at) Sunbeam-Talbot engine of similar vintage also used in the big Humbers
