Summary

Description

The viewing cone is a range of viewing directions for which certain visual properties of a display (e.g. luminance, contrast, chromaticity, etc.) have to remain within certain limits. Different applications usually require different viewing cones: a desk-top monitor for office work has to perform well within a restricted viewing cone (see e.g. ISO 13406-2: Viewing Direction Range Classes) and a public address display for advertising has to feature an extended viewing cone. The marketing division may convert the limited viewing cone of certain LCD-screens into the feature of a "privacy screen" (it is not a bug, it's a feature).

Each point in the polar coordinate system shown represents one distinct viewing direction specified by angle of inclination, Theta and azimuth, Phi. The value of the target quantity at this point (= direction) is given e.g. by lines of equal value (contour lines), by shades of grey or by pseudo-colors (as shown in the image above).
