Summary

Description

On 16 January 1941 the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) was formed in New Zealand. This wartime step was to enable the Royal New Zealand Air Force to release more men for service overseas, and paved the way for further women's involvement in the Second World War. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, "within 18 months a Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and a Women’s Royal Naval Service had also been created."

"The WAAF made an important contribution to the war effort. Initially, women were employed as cooks, mess-hands, drivers, clerks, equipment assistants, medical orderlies and shorthand typists. By the end of the war they were to be found in many trades," as well as in service overseas. In total, around 4750 women passed through its ranks.

'The Style for You is Air Force Blue!' was a recruitment booklet produced for the WAAF. Describing potential recruits as 'partners in victory', the booklet used extensive photography to highlight the role of women in wartime. WAAF files (including lists of those who served) and two large photographic albums of the WAAF, are also held at Archives New Zealand.
