For the suggested gloss 'Batavian nation', read: 'a Batavian by birth' or 'a Batavian by tribe'. (According to Cassell's Latin Dictionary, NATIO in Classical Latin = 'a being born; a tribe, race, people, esp. uncivilized'; it's not the equivalent of the modern concept of 'nation'.) BATAVVS in this dedication is an appositive of the man's name, not an adjective modifying the noun NATIONE, which, being in the ablative case, indicates the manner or reason by which he was a BATAVVS: 'by birth' or 'by tribe'.
