This work by Jean Metzinger is from his 1905-1906 Divisionist/proto-Cubist phase. This is the only work by Metzinger from this period to be found on Wikipedia. It cannot be replaced by one of his Cubist works (widely published before 1923), since the article in which it is reproduced discusses proto-Cubism, and those art movements, such as Divisionism and Neo-Impressionism, that were to influence the beginnings of Cubism. The claim that this image was replaceable in the article was made prior to the publication of the article (indeed the image was uploaded first). It is shown in the article Proto-Cubism next to a 1910 work by Gino Severini which employs the same, or similar, technique. This is a unique opportunity to analyze a work of Metzinger's 1905-1906 Divisionist/proto-Cubist phase, in the context of an article precisely on the historical topic of avant-garde art created between 1904 and 1910, at the heart of proto-Cubist epoch. For these reasons the non-free image (Two nudes in an exotic landscape) should remain in the article. Coldcreation (talk) 15:01, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leaving aside if this could be replaced by free picture of another piece of artwork, as this work still exists it is reasonable to assume a free picture could be obtained, either when on display in a country with FOP or a free picture released by the current owner. True, this picture still exists, but it would not be reasonable to assume that a free picture could be obtained, nor through FOP (though it was exhibited in Madrid recently, albeit not in a "public space") or released by the copyright holder (this will most certainly not happen in the near or distant future, pending the 70 years after the death of the artist). This non-free content cannot be replaced by a free version that has the same effect, nor could the subject be adequately conveyed by properly sourced text (without using the non-free content). The judicious use of non-free content should, in this particular case, support the development of a high-quality encyclopedia article. This low resolution image is not used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted media. The presence of this work in the Proto-Cubism article significantly increases the readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would certainly be detrimental to that understanding. It is believed that due to these points and others (I will elaborate if need be), all of the 10 Wikipedia non-free content criteria points are satisfied.
