Improvement ideas[edit]

The animated map is nice and all, but it's useless if the reader wants to compare regions of the world in a given month. Is there any way to separate the frames into separate files for a quick reference? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.87.189.17 (talkcontribs)

It's easy to separate the animated GIF into its frame images with free tools, e.g. "gifsicle". I have done so and uploaded the files to File:MeanMonthlyPJan.png, etc. —Keenan Pepper 08:02, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The animated map is wonderful, but I think it would be better still if the latitude of the sun for each month (perhaps the average latitude, or the range) was indicated by a horizontal line going up and down. Also, I'd like to be able to see the precipitation that falls on the sea as well.Arctic Gazelle (talk) 22:11, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If the latitude of the sun were shown by a horizontal line, the month could be indicated by the line, with the names of the months in a pair of columns extending from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn, perhaps in one or more oceans. As things stand it is very difficult to see what month it is while also seeing where the precipitation is. Also, it would be nice if one could pause the animation. How about having the names of the months in the oceans, but instead of being in columns, have them in breaks in the horizontal line that goes up and down? If the breaks were in different positions, one could deduce the name of the month from the position of the name and the break it is in, so there would be no need to be able to actually read the name. I think the precipitation for Antarctica should also be indicated like it is for Greenland. Arctic Gazelle (talk) 22:37, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that 'January', 'February', and so on is clearer than 'JAN', 'FEB', and so on.Arctic Gazelle (talk) 03:03, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two things which would be easy to implement:
  1. Make it slower, so that it's easier to see what's happening. Or, make several versions of it, with different speeds.
  2. Add a line showing the latitude at which the sun is overhead mid-month. Maproom (talk) 07:31, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Several different speeds would be good. At least one speed should be very fast e.g. all twelve months in one second, so that one could see at a glance whether a place gets any rain at all during the year.
A line showing the latitude of the sun at mid-month for each month is a great idea.
I am not a coder. I see from your page that you are. Could you do these two things if they are easy, please? Arctic Gazelle (talk) 08:51, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
