It's a photograph. It doesn't look like a modern photograph because this is very early color film, and the saturation levels of the color pigments are quite different from what we are used to. Thanks for the info--that's fascinating to know. I looked at the other pictures, and you know, they remind me of old National Geographics. I think I like the old pictures better than today. I've seen this happening in movies lately, that less and less color is getting used, and I think it's a shame.
