John Garcia (born 1 November 1928 in Houston, Texas)[1] was a former member of the Ohio House of Representatives. He died in 2003.[2] He was the first Hispanic ever voted into the Ohio General Assembly.

Family[edit]

Garcia was married to his wife Dolores and together they have 5 children: Gaye, John Jr., Thomas, Bruce, and Sue. Garcia and his wife lived in Toledo, Ohio. Garcia passed away March 26, 2003 after a long courageous battle with ALS. Garcia was also the proud grandfather of 11 and before he passed, he already had several great grandchildren. Garcia’s widow Dolores passed away December 6, 2021 at the age of 91. They are interred together at Lake Township Cemetery. [1]

Garcia graduated from a high school in Gibsonburg, Ohio. He was the first Hispanic to graduate.[1]

Religion[edit]

Garcia is a Methodist.[1]

Professional experience[edit]

Garcia was an hourly supervisor for Libbey-Owens Ford, retiring in the 1980’s. He started out as a Democrat and eventually became a Republican. Not only was Garcia active in politics but he was very active in the East Toledo, Ohio community. After Garcia fell ill, he was able to see Varland Avenue in East Toledo, between Woodville Road and East Broadway right by the East Toledo Family Center “John G. Garcia Way.” Garcia was the first Hispanic voted into the Ohio House. [1]
