De Sarthe Gallery is a modern and contemporary art gallery based in Hong Kong and Scottsdale, Arizona, and is owned by Pascal de Sarthe. The gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, is operated by Vincent de Sarthe.[1] It previously operated in Paris[2] and in San Francisco.[3]

History[edit]

Pascal and Sylvie de Sarthe founded de Sarthe Gallery in Paris in 1977.[2] The business moved to the United States in 1981 where it operated in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then Scottsdale, Arizona. De Sarthe dealt in both Eastern and Western contemporary art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.[4]

It moved to Duddell Street in Central, Hong Kong in 2011, and then to the Wong Chuk Hang district at the end of 2016.[4][5] It simultaneously operated a gallery space in Beijing in the Caochangdi gallery district from 2014 until it received an eviction notice from the government in 2018.[6]

In 2022, the gallery moved to a new building within the Wong Chuk Hang district of Hong Kong.[7]

Since 2015 it has been among the hundreds of galleries taking part in Art Basel Hong Kong.[8][9][10][11] The gallery is a member of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association and participates in the monthly Southside Saturday programs.[12]

Beginning in 2017, the gallery established an annual de Sarthe Artist Residency (deSAR) during the summer season, culminating in an exhibition. Past residents have included Andrew Luk (2017),[13] Christopher K. Ho (2018),[14] Mark Chung (2020), Bobby Chen Pin Tao (2021), Chan Ka Kiu (2023).[15]

The gallery represents a variety of many artists of the 1980s and 1990s generations born in Hong Kong and mainland China including: Mak2,[16] Lin Jingjing, Wang Jiajia, Ma Sibo, and Zhong Wei.[17]
