Schulich School of Business

The Schulich School of Business is a business school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada operating under York University. It offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in business administration, finance, public administration and international business as well as a number of PhD and executive programmes. Originally known as the Faculty of Administrative Studies, it was renamed in 1995 after Seymour Schulich, a major benefactor who has donated more than $20 million to the school.[1].

Prior to 1996, the Schulich School of Business was known as the Faculty of Administrative Studies at York University.

[edit] Seymour Schulich Building

The Seymour Schulich Building, opened in August 2003, is a $102-million state-of-the-art complex. The building was jointly designed by Siamak Hariri and Robbie/Young & Wright Architects Inc. and was awarded Governor General's Medal in Architecture in 2006[2]. The Seymour Schulich Building and its Executive Learning Centre houses Peter F. Bronfman Business Library, Executive Dining Room, Robert R. McEwen Auditorium, Tuchner's Restaurant, Timothy's World Coffee, and a multi-storey hotel, and a number of small lecture halls.

[edit] Miles S. Nadal Management Centre

Management programmes are held in downtown Toronto at the Miles S. Nadal Management Centre which is located in the Ernst & Young Tower of the Toronto Dominion Centre. The closest subway stations to the downtown location are King, Union and St. Andrew's on the Yonge-University-Spadina line.

The Schulich School of Business offers a number of graduate programmes:

Master of Business Administration

International Masters of Business Administration is an MBA program with a strong emphasis on International Business.

Schulich offers a joint Executive MBA program with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University

MBA with Bachelor of Laws

Master of Business Administration, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Arts

Master of Public Administration

[edit] Undergraduate

Schulich offers two undergraduate programmes:

  • BBA
  • International BBA (iBBA)

The undergraduate programs (BBA and iBBA) enroll about 380 students (280 for BBA and 100 for iBBA) from an average of 4500 to 5000 applicants per year. Applicants must also submit a Supplementary Information Form that includes a summary of the organizations, sports teams, volunteer or paid work etc that the applicant has been involved in. There are three essay type questions on the Supplementary Information Form. Two reference letters are also required. While the minimum acceptable grade fluctuates every year based on the quality of applicants, the school currently recommends that applicants have an average in the 90s. All undergraduate applicants must take at least 6 U and M courses, but cannot take more than 2 M courses in the same discipline. Applicants must also take Grade 12 English (U) and Grade 12 Advanced Functions and either Grade 12 Data Management or Grade 12 Calculus (Calculus Recommended). In 2008-2009, the iBBA programme will be in its 9th class, and the BBA programme will be in its 31st. Similar to the graduate programme, students are not required to specialise in a discipline.

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Schulich offer a joint EMBA.

In February 2009, Schulich officially launched a new joint MBA programme, the Schulich India MBA, with the S P Jain Institute of Management and Research in Mumbai, India.[3]

L'Université Laval and Schulich offer a joint programme established to graduate bilingual and bicultural managers.

Schulich maintains student-exchange relationships with over seventy business schools in over forty-five countries such as Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Milan, Italy and University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.[4]

  • Cyril Bouquet, 2004 Richard Farmer award for best dissertation at the Academy of International Business.[5]

Each of these organisations solicits membership from newly admitted students during Club Week, the first week of classes. Very often there is a nominal fee of $20 for membership, which helps to cover the costs of many of the events that each organization holds throughout the academic year. Such events include guest speakers, field trips, case competitions, wine and cheese functions and much more. The executive committee for each association is elected towards the end of every academic year for leadership in the following year.[8]

The ranking measures full-time MBA programmes against four criteria: "[opens] new career opportunities", "personal development/educational experience", "increase [in] salary", and "potential to network."
  • 49th [11] in the 2009 Financial Times MBA rankings, down one spot from previous ranking and 49th over a three-year average (2007 - 2009). The ranking measures MBA programmes against graduates' current weighted salary, graduates' increase in salary, percentage of graduates employed in three months, and number of faculty publications.
