Sofa painting is a pejorative term for paintings that match a color scheme or match a sofa.
However, a 2002 exhibition of sofa art, entitled "A Painting for Over the Sofa (that’s not necessarily a painting)," showed that art made to go over the sofa could also communicate highly charged artistic messages. The exhibition, organized by the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in Miami, Florida, debuted at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, Tennessee.
