Define vehicle layout[edit]

Define vehicle layout 106.66.28.30 (talk) 02:49, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The first sentence of the article says "The layout of a motorised vehicle such as a car is often defined by the location of the engine and drive wheels."  Stepho  talk  10:40, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Car layoutPowertrain layout – I suggest moving the article to 'Powertrain layout', 'Car powertrain layout' or 'Engine drive layout'. The current name of just 'Car layout' is vague, and the first that comes to mind is things such as seating positions, storage, door types and placement, trunk layout, etc., which would be interesting subjects, but not what this article is about Sauer202 (talk) 22:13, 27 July 2022 (UTC)— Relisting. —usernamekiran (talk) 02:00, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see now that the wikidata item is named 'automobile layout', with the broader definition of 'how the chassis and powertrain of an automobile are designed'. If so, perhaps the article should be expanded with other topics such as seating positions, storage, door types and placement, trunk layout, etc., monocoque vs body-on-frame, hybrid vehicle drivetrains, et cetera. Sauer202 (talk) 22:19, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article is about the position of the engine and the driven wheels. It should not talk about doors, seats, etc. Keep the article focused.
Please note that car and automobile are synonyms, so changing to 'automobile layout' doesn't change anything. 'Powertrain layout' doesn't tell us that it is about cars (as opposed to a plane, train, ship, motorbike, etc). But I can't think of any other suitable name.  Stepho  talk  23:15, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that car and automobile are synonomous, but I wanted to point out that both the current article name and wikidata item indicates a way more more general article than what it currently is. I think it's a good idea to keep the article focused on powertrain layouts in cars, as is. To keep the article name specific to cars, I suggest 'Powertrain placement in cars' (if that isn't unnecessarily long), or alternatively 'Powertrain layout in cars', 'Powertrain placement (cars)', or 'Powertrain layout (cars)'. The term powertrain layout seems to be used in English language scientific literature on motor vehicle engineering for exactly what this article intends to describe. Thus, I'd support a move to "powertrain layout". Other sorts of "car layouts" (e. g. seating layouts) are so uniform across virtually all cars, that there doesn't seem to be that much of a reason for literature to describe these.
