Name[edit]

Who ever came up with the idea "Beside the lake" stadium?!? Please stop trying to translate everything. The name "Ob jezeru" is the official name of the stadium and used in all documents and therof you cant translate it to something in English or whatever. What is next? Changing Ljudski vrt to "People's garden"??? Its like if you would want to translate the official names of club "Rudar Velenje" to "Miners Velenje" or something? Or if you want to translate "Schwartzkopf" to "Črnaglava". UEFA uses the name Ob jezeru for this stadium.Ratipok (talk) 11:12, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree with the tone of the objection above, but I do agree that names of sports facilities (like names of companies, which many sports facilities actually are) are often left untranslated (e.g., Nürburgring, Circuit d'Albi), although there are many fully translated names too (e.g., South Lake Sports Center, Green Park Stadium), as well as hybrids (e.g., Celtnieks Stadium = 'builder', Zakhidnyi Stadium = 'west'). In any case, for untranslated names, it's useful to gloss names that are obvious (cf. Nürburgring, Locations of note). Although "Ob Jezeru City Stadium" may be objected to as an English-Slovene hybrid, "Beside the Lake Stadium" and "Stadium Beside the Lake" are quite awkward. If I were to gloss or translate the name, I'd suggest the more natural "Lakeside Stadium" (cf. Lakeside Stadium, Lakeside Shopping Centre, etc.). As a very general trend, English frequently leaves names in "familiar" languages untranslated (e.g., German, French, Italian, Spanish) and frequently translates names in "exotic" languages (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Arabic). All three solutions (translation, original, hybrid) are widely used for stadiums and other sports facilities. I'd be comfortable with a formulation like "Ob Jezeru City Stadium (Slovene: Mestni stadion ob jezeru; literally, 'Lakeside City Stadium')". I generally don't prefer hybrid solutions, but they seem very common for such names, perhaps facilitated by the syntactically similar use of non-English team names (cf. Traktar Stadium, Lokomotiv Stadium (Moscow))—but cf. also Red Star Stadium and Red Star Stadium (Omsk). Doremo (talk) 13:29, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also be comfortable with "Lakeside Stadium (Slovene: Mestni stadion ob jezeru)" but I doubt that a good argument could be made for it based on reliable sources, regardless of WP:ENGLISH. Doremo (talk) 13:37, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article could simply be named Ob jezeru and then in the lead it could start with "Ob jezeru (English: By the lake -> or whatever the correct translation is) is the name of a multi-sport stadium located... Similary to Anfield and Ljudski vrt, when both articles doesnt have "Stadium" in their titles. I have seen several times UEFA using (on their official website) only this "Stadium: Ob jezeru" for this venue. Ratipok (talk) 17:23, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
