Untitled[edit]

Moved from article:

The example of the Irish potato famine is appropriate; however, the statement that this disease (blight) was caused by a virus is incorrect. There is abundant and consistent evidence that the potato disease responsible for the famine was caused by Phytophthora infestans (1), formely classified as a fungus, but now placed in the Kingdom Stramenopila, Phylum Oomycota, Class Oomycetes, Order Perenosporales, and Family Pythiaceae (2). This new classification includes the genus Phytophthora and other Oomycetes, the brown algae (giant kelps), the diatoms, the yellow-green algae, and the golden-brown algae. There is, to the best of my knowledge, no convincing evidence that the Irish potato famine was caused by a virus.

Merge[edit]

---DO NOT MOVE---

Genetic Diversity is the difference of animals in the same species, while genetic variation is the difference between SIMILAR species!

No, that's not what genetic variation is. Please sign comments. Richard001 06:27, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Genetic variation[edit]

Genetic variation has now been redirected here, but there is no mention of the word. What sort of a merge is this? Richard001 (talk) 08:17, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Consider merging this article with genetic variability since the concepts are very close and it's not always clear when to link to the diversity or variability page. Proposed name for the merged page: genetic variation. – SteveChervitzTrutane (talk) 09:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Opposite[edit]

Whats the oppoiste of genetic diversity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.23.240.86 (talk) 23:42, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Importance of Genetic Diversity with Mammals[edit]

1. Consider adding some examples of low genetic diversity with mammals (i.e. cheetahs) 2. Consider talking about the importance of maintaining genetic diversity with mammals. (low population and generation times) 3. Also adding factors that lead to low genetic diversity in mammals. As an educational effort for conservation biology of mammals.
