Jose Calugas

1275 – 750 years ago, Edward I permits his mother Eleanor of Provence to expel the Jews from the towns Worcester, Marlborough, Cambridge and Gloucester.
1809 – Peninsular War: French forces under Jean-de-Dieu Soult attacked the British's amphibious evacuation under Sir John Moore at Corunna in Galicia, Spain.
1862 – A pumping engine at a colliery in New Hartley, England, broke and fell down the shaft, trapping miners below and resulting in 204 deaths.
1942 – World War II: During the Battle of Bataan, U.S. Army sergeant Jose Calugas (pictured) organized a squad of volunteers to man an artillery position under heavy fire, which later earned him the Medal of Honor.
1964 – The musical Hello, Dolly! opened at the St. James Theatre on Broadway, and went on to win ten Tony Awards, a record that stood for 37 years.
2018 – In Mrauk U, Myanmar, police fired into a crowd protesting the ban of an event to mark the anniversary of the end of the Kingdom of Mrauk U, resulting in seven deaths and twelve injuries.

Should Dr. Laura Schlessinger be linked [[Dr. Laura]] (her common name) or [[Laura Schlessinger]] (her real name) or [[Dr. Laura Schlessinger]] (the whole kit n' kaboodle)?

To my knowledge, we don't link to people with their titles.

Someone like Dr. Ruth or Dr. Laura would be appropriate for REDIRECTs, in my opinion, but the primary entry should be under the given name. A counter example would be Queen Victoria, but I actually don't think it should be there, it should be Victoria I, but a REDIRECT, I guess makes sense.

Ow...good point. I think Dr. Laura Schlessinger. ALthough I'd rather ignore her existence... :-) Of course, if we're going to start down this path, is it Sally, Sally Jesse, Sally Jesse Raphael???JHK

Is there any "best practice" for dates? The attack on Iraq in 1991 started at 3am local time (January 17), 7pm Washington time (January 16). If you consider Operation Desert Storm more as media event, then Jan 16 is correct as the starting date. But I personally would prefer local time for local events, and GMT for global ones. Jan Palach[edit]

"Freedom fighter"?

I think the use of that time is completely incorrect.

Jan Palach staged a protest against an illegal invasion of his country.

He did not attack any of the invading forces, was not engaged in warfare.

International Fetish Day[edit]

I was thining of adding International Fetish Day to the selected anniversary list, in the section were "Teacher's Day" currently is. The problem is that it is a new observance to be held for the first time in 2009. However, it is mentioned in this article, is referenced, and I feel would be worthy of inclusion as it is an international as apposed to just a national day. It would appear that you thought about adding it after you had already added it. It is my assumption that when you say "selected anniversaries" you mean "Holidays and observances" because observances don't go in Selected Anniversaries. If it hasn't happened yet, you have no way of knowing its global impact or if it will be recurring every year on the same date or if it will be widely celebrated. Lacking all of this information would lead to the entry being removed anyway. Checkout this for info on what can be added.
