Last.fm is NOT usable for citations[edit]

Last.fm Radio is no longer free. They'll charge 3€/mo, starting from April.[edit]

This announcement generated over 1600 complaints (comments) in two days, then discussion was quickly closed. (A forum is still available, but heavily moderated.)

People have been throwing a lot of insults at last.fm, for example:

  • Discrimination against countries (UK, US and DE got a free pass, only the poor countries will have to pay.)
  • Datamining, as in accepting listening statistics for free, then dumping those who are not willing to pay the new fee.
  • Collecting a "being-from-the-wrong-country-fee".

Others just expressed their disappointment in one line before leaving:

  • Sucks!
  • Bye bye last.fm
  • Account deleted
  • End of last.fm
  • RIP 2002-2009
  • Disgusting
  • It was good while it lasted.

People who are from the "right countries" (US/UK/DE), and even those who have been paying a subscription fee before are now threatening to cancel their accounts if this was not a joke.

They only charge this money for the radio service. Playing separate songs in the web-based flash player, scrobbling music, and a ton of other things will still remain free for everyone. So basically, the website still remains free. It's only the radio that will cost 3€ for people outside UK/US/Germany. Some twat semi-protected the article though, so it can't be corrected. But things to correct:

Infobox: Registration €3.00 per month except for US, UK, or Germany -> SHOULD BE FREE. The 3€ is for extra services. And also, people in US/UK/Germany can also still pay 3€ for voluntary subscription.

Funding and staff section: On Tuesday, 24 March 2009 it was announced on the official Last.fm blog that Last.fm will charge users — except for those in the United States, United Kingdom, or Germany — a subscription fee of €3.00 per month. should be "per month for use of the radio functionality."

Subscriber accounts: Access to Last.fm radio for users outside US/UK/Germany should be added as an extra feature.

Removing template for requesting edit, I guess I'm supposed to do that now I made the edit? IMO poor manners and etiquette don't have to be a reason to ignore someone's constructive contributions to the Wiki when it comes to correcting errors made by others. - (been long ago since I used Wiki, only bothered because I was asked to do so on MSN, can't remember how to sign comments - Sneltrekker)


This announcement generated another 1000 comments, most of them complaints from existing users outside the lucky three countries.

New issue: If you buy a (physical) radio in the UK that uses last fm, in some cases there is a charge for using the service - so it is not always free. From the information available it seems that the Logitech Squeezebox has a free last.fm service, whereas the Roberts 83i or the IKON require a fee after the first 30 days. This conflicts with the claim that the service is free in the UK, Germany and US. Is it necessary to provide pricing schedules on the main page? Under: "Wikipedia is not a soapbox or [b]means of promotion[/b]", radio pricing is mentioned more than a few times and makes the main page look like last.fm's subscription sign-up page (e.g. subscription pricing was not allowed on the Final Fantasy XIV page). The info about awards, prizes and other rcognition seems to be added here-&-there, in random places.
