Untitled[edit]

I lived in Wisconsin during some of Les Aspins service in the House. It is my understanding that he served as an officer in the U. S. Navy during his military service period. There were reports in the local Milwaukee media ("Milwaukee Journal" or "Milwaukee Sentinel", now "Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel") that Aspin had claimed that during the entire period of his active military service he had never owned a uniform or worn one. If he had performed active service in the National Capitol Region as an officer that claim wouldn't have been too strange, as it's my understanding that there was (pre 9/11) a policy that serving military officers don't wear uniforms to work during peacetime conditions. Les Aspin spoke at my home when I was living in Waterford in 1970. He had been in the Army, not the Navy. Perhaps you are thinking of Henry Schadeburg or Lynn Stalbaum?

Not wearing a uniform during military service is pretty much impossible. you are issued one after boot camp, you are expected to wear it during certain ceremonies. The only ones who do not are those in CID or other military criminal investigation branches, but its suit and tie. IF you are assigned to a sensitive position where wearing a uniform could put you in danger, such as overseas, you may not wear one. Wearing one during travel under military orders is one where you have to wear a uniform unless your orders specify that you travel in civilian clothes (again there is a security or safety issue for that).

Some of this changed post 9/11, especially what used to be called fatigues or combat uniforms. In my opinion, there's too much of that and not enough Class A's (the usual uniform with medals and tie and shined shoes). Officers are NOT issued any personal uniforms. They have to buy everything and it's their responsibility to maintain such in a suitable and proper condition.--TGC55 (talk) 10:51, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shoplifting?[edit]

His ~~predecessor~~ subordinate, the Undersecretary and subsequently Acting Secretary of the Army John Shannon, was placed on administrative leave after being accused of shoplifting from a PX at Fort Myers. That may have something to do with this. Choess 19:15, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that in some google searches. I think it may be an honest mistake based on poor recollection. But it is disturbing that after the Siegenthaler thing, that an anonymous IP would be able to put in a sentence that would amount to defamation that lasted for 2 months (and numerous post edits). The only thing that is missing is that the press didn't use Wikipedia as a reference for the claim. And of course the fact that Aspin is dead.--Tbeatty 21:19, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
