French Wikipedia has lots mo' better information, if you have the patience to translate it for us: "Lille" --Wetman 11:17, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Ok, I started on the translation, from history straight on. It can be cleaned up still, though. Souk 22:47, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you :) FoeNyx 15:03, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Wetman interfering again: I removed this: " Near the "Grand-Place" and "Vieille Bourse", one can still see Austrian cannonballs lodged in the façades around the "Place du Théâtre"." The "cannonballs' are actually decorative cartouches. A cute detail, though, preserved in the photo caption. --Wetman 09:19, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Onaryc here, 2 aug 2006: I had to change Wetman's contribution about the cannonballs actually being cartouches. The cartouches and the cannonballs are two different things in the picture, and you shouldn't confuse the former and the latter. So the original description was actually true. More cannonballs are visible in walls a little further on in the same area of the town. --Onaryc 12:54, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone update the "Economy" section too ? « major textile manufacturing center » isnt really up to date (some decades late). I would do it if my english was not so bad. —FoeNyx 20:05, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

In fact there is much more to retranslate now :p --FoeNyx 13:53, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New Infobox Template proposition[edit]

I'd like to bring your attention to a new - or other - version of the "Large French Cities" infobox presently at use in a few French cities pages. The present version is much too large, partly because it consecrates too much space to information having little importance to French demography and an only distant and indirect relevence to the city itself. Instead I propose to follow a less cumbersome model closer to that used by the New York City article - you can view the new version in the Paris talk page here. Please view and comment. Picarde capital?[edit]

I think that Lille is "capital of the Flanders", which, I suppose, links it to Belgium... Picardie is farther below.

Suggestions for improving the article[edit]

I've been reviewing global city articles, and right now this is one of the weakest, rather surprising to me. Can I suggest the following:

  • The history section is too long as is; it would make the great start to a new article, History of Lille. Summarise the key stuff on this page, and use {{main}} to link to the history article.
  • Expand the economy section.
  • Most cities also have sections on Culture (sports, cuisine, nightlife, etc), Demographics, Geography (including climate). Do people live in Lille and do stuff other than travel?

Hope this helps, Walkerma 04:58, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thalys[edit]

Just to be clear - Lille is not served by the Thalys system - see their page here. Thalys doesn't serve any French cities apart from Paris. Pfainuk 17:10, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map?[edit]

Can we find a map that shows the city in a little more detail? Like, where it's located in the region/departement, or something like that? This is just my bias but those are the kinds of maps I like to see.--Dmz5 01:02, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Antwerp?[edit]

"The Count of Flanders controlled a number of old Roman cities (Boulogne, Arras, Cambrai) as well as some founded by the Carolingians (Valenciennes, Saint-Omer, Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp). The County of Flanders thus extended to the left bank of the Scheldt, one of the richest and most properous regions of Europe."

Antwerp is at the right bank of the Scheldt and was, as far as I know, a part of the Duchy of Brabant.Hooiwind 15:33, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, with the weakening of the Germanic Empire the Count of Flanders gradually extended his dominion over parts on the right bank. Antwerp became part of Flanders in 1356. But I fully agree with deleting it in that passage, it is too confusing. --Paul Pieniezny 16:41, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ATO[edit]

One of the earliest examples of ATO was on the Victoria line of the London Underground, opened in 1968. The ATO system performs all functions of the driver except for the closing of the doors. The driver only needs to press two buttons to close the doors and if the way is clear, then the train will automatically proceed to the next station.

What does this have to do with Lille? 76.21.8.213 (talk) 02:50, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WPCities importance rating[edit]

Downrated to C. The criteria for B states: "The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations where necessary. It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited. The use of citation templates such as is not required, but the use of tags is encouraged." Verifiability is a basic necessity for a reference work. There are some citations, but these are few and some sections are totally lacking. Other projects' criteria may be less demanding, so I haven't changed those. Lille arrests[edit]

How many important figures can be arrested in Lille before is it is worthy of mention concerning "contemporary" Lille? I know the city and am in regular correspondence. Of course there is no mention at fr.wikipedia.org but our articles need not be concerned with the reputation of Lille. We are not advertising a tourist attraction or business centre. It is here that relying on French articles is not sufficient. French chauvinism of Lille burghers need not be our concern in an English article: the facts of the arrests are widely reported by international news agencies.

This is no trivial matter to overlook - any more than corruption in Chicago, Montreal or Moscow.
