Page move[edit]

Largest Car Ferry Claim[edit]

Think it is time to edit the claim to largest car ferry in the world. Even Irish Ferries are now only claiming "largest car ferry on the Irish Sea". The new Stena Brittanica and Stena Hollandica exceed her size in all respects except passenger capacity being 62,200GT, 240m long and with 5,500 lane metres of freight space to Ulysses 59,938GT, 209m and 4,101 lane metres of freight space. Oppose per Anthony, target is a shipindex, and not a free space.
- Comment if this is moved somewhere, the current title "MS Ulysses" should point to the shipindex. (as well as M/S Ulysses and M/V Ulysses & M.S. Ulysses and M.V. Ulysses)

Move to MV Ulysses (2000) per WP:NCSHIP with assorted redirects to the ship index MV Ulysses as suggested by IP above. Regarding the request for sources by Andy Dingley, the ship is usually just referred to as the Ulysses, but this page by Harland and Wolff, regarding their maintenance work on the ship, call it MV Ulysses, and I guess they know what they are talking about. Comment: Technically, in professional usage, M/S and M/V are pretty much interchangeable, just as "ship" and "vessel"—which is the source of the two variants of a ship/vessel powered by internal combustion engines. Which is used where is pretty much the choice of the writer or company policy in its publications and advertising. It was not Harland and Wolff knowing "what they are talking about" as how they are the ship's owners tended to refer to the ships/vessels. I've heard some pretending to be "salty" waxing on M/S is for "big" ships and M/V is for "little" vessels, but that is pretty much for those we'd send to grease the relative bearings. - Comment. These prefixes are indeed interchangeable and the choice is a matter of policy or preference. None are right or wrong. That applies equally to whether to have a prefix or not. Not one of the online citations in this article uses any. My personal preference (for what it is worth) is to eschew the automatic addition of prefixes, except where they are are indeed in genuinely common usage - but I know that some editors cannot resist adding their favourite, even if the sources do not support it. It misleads some into thinking that the prefix is part of the name (only very rarely does the actual name begin with ~"MV" or the like). Unfortunately I fear my preference is a lost cause. Note, by the way, that the majority of relevant ferries using Template:FerriesIrishSea have been given "MS" titles. Davidships (talk) 14:18, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  - For that precise reason such prefixes should never be the disambiguation for a ship. They are purely stylistic and both references and searchers will use equally "valid" variations. (Ha, "cannot resist adding," as the constant increase in the list of ship prefixes demonstrates. I can only shake my head in wonder.
