Been over this multiple times already: If "either version is acceptable", i.e. as found inconsistently in sources, then that means automatically that only one version is acceptable on Wikipedia, the lower-case one, because per MOS:CAPS: only words and phrases that are consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources are capitalized in Wikipedia. Support: Per MOS:CAPS (esp. MOS:SPORTCAPS, MOS:SIGCAPS) and the derived WP:NCCAPS. Not "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent reliable sources". Argh. Why was this not merged into the related RMs on nearly identical article titles? I'm not going to re-re-redo all of the same analysis this time; just see what I already posted at Talk:MLS Supplemental Draft#Requested move 17 March 2024, and Talk:2001 WUSA Supplemental Draft#Requested move 17 March 2024, and Talk:2024 NWSL Expansion Draft#Requested move 17 March 2024. The salient search results for the NHL case and some highlights from them: Scholar News. Over 90% of the non-news material, at the first link, is lower-case. In news, note that the vast majority of the capitalization is found in "official" promotional sites of the league itself or teams thereof; city/state official websites promoting events they are hosting; ticket sellers; fansites; student publications; and other material that fails WP:INDY or otherwise fails WP:RS. Actual journalism in professional publications leans strongly lower-case. See in particular the hits for Yahoo!News, The Hockey News, The London Free Press (Ontario), Vice, SportsNet.ca, etc. A few publications like Bleacher Report are not consistent about it, even within the same article, though clearly lean lower-case. Actual independent news virtually never is consistently capitalizing this. I thought Chronicle Journal might be, based on one upper-case hit, but nope, they're 2/3 lower-case [1]; same with Edmonton Journal but a 1/3 ratio [2], and SportingNews.com, about 50:50 [3]). Even some of the student publications (e.g. The Vermont Cynic of U. of VT) get it right. The only independent-looking support I can find for consistently capitalizing this is at the semi-professional sports blog TheHockeyWriters.com, but they capitalize all sorts of things they should not, including just the phrase "supplemental draft" in isolation (and "the Original Six teams in the north", "the 'Rat Trick' became a tradition", "in five Finals appearances", etc., etc.) something WP would never do; that site is utterly unreliable as a reference with regard to how to write. Same with various fansites like HotTimeInOldTown.com (Chicago Fire FC fan blog), full of broken-ass writing like "A little more on each player, other Supplemental Draft thoughts, Yamith Cuesta might be leaving, and Steven Kinney may never return are all after the break."
Anyway, it is not possible for this to "be" a capitalized proper name that WP must capitalize if the independent sources are very frequently not capitalizing it. No one writes "asia" or "shakespeare" since those are proper names that are consistently capitalized by nearly all source material. It just is not the case with "NHL supplemental draft" (with or without a year attached). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 12:42, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
