Etymology of the name[edit]

As another data point possibly in support of the Koreanic theory, I note that Empress Genmei who ordered the move to Nara in 708 was the daughter of Emperor Tenji, in turn the son of Empress Kōgyoku. According to Alexander Vovin, one of the Man'yōshū poems, specifically poem # 9 by Lady Nukata, starts out in Old Korean and was composed in 658 with Empress Kōgyoku as the intended audience. With Empress Genmei as Empress Kōgyoku's granddaughter, it is not unreasonable to explore the possibility that Empress Genmei may also have had knowledge of Old Korean, more specifically the variety used by the Baekje.
