Talk:Over-the-air update

Most OTA actions up to the present are not firmware but data. Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA), which transmits new phone operating software, is a recent introduction. OTA is also used to refer to device provisioning activity over the network.

OTA downloading of content[edit]

I see OTA used more often to refer to over the air download of content, be it a J2ME or BREW app, ringtones, wallpapers, or whatnot. Mathiastck 15:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Self contradiction?[edit]

One sentence says: "...central location can send an Update to all the Users; who are unable to refuse, defeat, or alter that Update..." Next sentence says: "...A User could "refuse" OTA but the "Channel Manager" could also kick them off the Channel..." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.56.153.73 (talk) 14:43, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the word "often", but that still doesn't completely absolve it of a contradiction. JGHFunRun (talk) 03:42, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Voyager spacecraft[edit]

Was it the first OTA programming? Noted for achieving it over one billion miles. If so it may be worth adding to the article. 89.240.193.13 (talk) 02:55, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this like an advertisement[edit]

The first few paragraphs of this behave like corporate copy describing over the air programming. this is silly. 2600:1700:66D0:2540:74AE:DC69:5D99:DA76 (talk) 16:17, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The old title was unclear. I initially thought it referred to television programmes.

Boldly moved Over-the-air programming to Over-the-air update. Clear common term. DFlhb (talk) 08:00, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I may have overstated that. I initially thought the term "over-the-air programming" was dubious, since most results I found were were from IGI Global (an unreliable pay-to-publish outfit) or unreliable sites, but it seems the term does exist in scholarship, and is present in Google Ngram[1], though not as common as "OTA update". Still think it's more recognizable. DFlhb (talk) 20:17, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
